Car Chases Picking Up Speed In Hill County

On Sunday, Havre police were involved in another pursuit.

The incident came just four days after a pursuit down Fifth Avenue into Beaver Creek Highway ended when the driver hit a deer, halting the chase in its tracks.

Lt. Aaron Wittmer of the Havre Police Department told the Herald Monday that pursuits have indeed become more frequent. He didn’t have exact numbers handy, but said Havre police have chased more fleeing drivers in 2019 than in previous years combined.

In May, a pursuit resulted in a fatal crash. The driver of the reportedly stolen vehicle died. Two others, including a Pennsylvania man, were injured.

Sunday’s chase began after police tried to pull over a 1985 Chevrolet Camaro for speeding through town, according to a press release.

The driver never stopped for the officer and the chase was on through Havre.

The Camaro eventually crashed into a Chevy pickup on the 900 block of Fourth Avenue.

“Both vehicles sustained extensive damage,” the press release said.

Police immediately detained the driver, Jaden James Blacktongue, and a 21-year-old Box Elder woman who was not identified.

A third person, Jaylen Crazyboy, fled the scene but was eventually found and arrested.

The suspected driver, 18-year-old Blacktongue of Great Falls, was arrested on pending charges of driving without a driver’s license, reckless driving, traveling the wrong way down a one-way street, speeding, failing to stop at stop signs, obstruction, four counts of criminal endangerment, minor in possession of an intoxicant, having an open container, DUI, and a City Court warrant.

Crazyboy, 18, was also arrested and is facing pending charges of obstruction, two counts, criminal trespass to property, violation of District Court conditions, having an open container, and minor in possession of an intoxicant.

Both are being held in the Hill County Detention Center without bond.
