Cameron Dow Overcast is accused of killing two bull elk from the seat of a pickup truck and leaving them to waste in a field 30 miles from Chinook.

Overcast, of Chinook, is scheduled to appear for his arraignment in Blaine County Justice Court on seven pending charges.

Justice Court documents say Overcast shot and killed two bull elk with a 22-250 rifle while driving on Lloyd Road in Blaine County.

He shot the elk Feb. 11, out of season and on property where he did not have permission to hunt, prosecutors contend.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks made a plea for the public’s help on Feb. 14, when Region 6 Havre wardens received a tip about a dead bull elk about two miles north of Cow Creek Reservoir, off Lloyd Road south of Chinook.

Wardens responded and found a 7-by-7 bull elk. Another dead 6-by-6 bull elk was found nearby.

After further investigation, wardens determined both elk were shot and left to waste on the hillside, according to an FWP news release.

Wardens then reached out to the public for any information on the “wanton waste of two bull elk.”

“This is not hunting, this is a crime that occurred well outside of established hunting seasons,” FWP said.

The pending charges against Overcast include waste of a game animal, game fish, or game bird, two counts; failure to obtain landowner permission for hunting; hunting or fishing during closed season-large game animal, two counts; unlawful hunting from a public highway; and hunting from a motor vehicle.

Overcast has a criminal endangerment offense from 2010 in Hill County.

This story has been updated to include Overcast’s photo and info about a prior offense.
